Personality:

Beta as a person is a study in nature vs nurture. Because the immortal billionaires that created her viewed her as nothing but a tool, Beta was raised in complete isolation, only in contact with robot servitors. While it left her with some clearly inhuman mannerisms, it’s had an even greater effect on her mentally, and the wounds run deep.

Before significant development, Beta is more inclined to anxiety and pessimism, trapped so long in the inescapability of her life that a change for the better was unthinkable for most of her existence. While she still possesses the telltale tenacity, intelligence, and stubbornness that comes with being made of Elisabet Sobeck, it’s buried deep, initially only emerging when backed into a corner by Aloy’s displeasure with her. The two spend most of their time together at odds, neither able to see the other past their misconceptions of them. Beta reacts like a sullen teenager, guarded and lashing out with sarcasm. Because she has never been taught how to handle her emotions, simply forced to disassociate in virtual reality when she presented too much trouble, she has poor emotional control. Simply put, she’s akin to a mistreated animal, huddling into the corner when someone tries to pet it. When she’s afraid or feels threatened, she lashes out verbally.

In an attempt to assess how similar Beta was to her former lover, Far Zenith’s Tilda created a virtual data channel for Beta to meet her in. This was the first time Beta had met another human and it was a period of time that impacted her heavily. She talks about it with longing. It's clear her time in the data channel and the memory of Tilda's Earth home it presents was sheltering for her, a place of refuge in a restricted, barren life. She recalls the surroundings with longing more than Tilda's company; not because she didn't want the company, but because Tilda's memory is a painful one, an unhealed wound she'll bite to protect. Regardless of the shelter and comfort the experience brought, it’s an intensely painful memory all the same; when Aloy pushes for information about Tilda herself, Beta shuts down and refuses to speak ore in-depth. This is because after a few months Tilda discarded Beta for not living up to her ideal of Elisabet. With no explanation for why Tilda suddenly stopped visiting her, Beta was only left with her own conclusions - that something was inherently wrong with her, unable to be valued by the only person who ever bothered speaking to her. It’s contributed toward her being someone terrified of abandonment but also quick to attach herself to others when they show kindness.

And Beta craves kindness. Despite her experience with Tilda, she's still prone to latching on at the smallest sign of it. At odds with Aloy, the only person Beta initially warms to is the kind, persistent Varl. It's thanks to Varl's kindness and patience that we begin to see who Beta is underneath her fear. Beta is someone who desires warmth, kindness, and approval from others, and she reacts strongly when presented with it. Though she is quick to withdraw back into herself, Beta wants nice conversations and friendship, she craves companionship and connection. Despite her awkwardness and anxiety when it comes to other people, she doesn’t dislike them. When presented with the ability to help and the real possibility it will work, she wants to. Beta wants to step up and be the brave hero that Elisabet and Aloy were and are, but it's something that will take time and effort.

Still, Beta does have Elisabet’s bravery, even if she doesn’t believe so. When she discovered what she thought were the true intentions of her captors, that she would be used to control Gaia and wipe out the existing biosphere and all life with it to reboot the planet, she was initially horrified but resigned. However, the discovery of Aloy's existence sparks this bravery in her. The escape she pulled off after meeting Aloy was a dangerous one that could have resulted in her death or punishment, but she did it anyway. Beta would rather die than be the Zenith's slave for much longer, or see the world and its people destroyed. Before the Zenith’s were killed, she was terrified of being recaptured, but she still put her trust in Aloy to protect her and do her part to recapture a rogue AI. She joins the mission and even offers to distract a rather large, dangerous machine to protect Aloy. She's terrified, yes, but not a coward. Not really.

Meeting Aloy and joining the Gaia base was a life-changing event for Beta, the death of the Zeniths even more so. With the looming threat of her captors gone, Beta has the chance to begin to really look to the future. With her sister at her side, she’s begun to hope more, to stand a little straighter with her head held a little higher.
